Subj: Update on the APC Exam
This is a progress report on the efforts to improve the APC exam and
eliminate the problems identified by the field.
* Upon review of all comments, the database that
creates the on-line exam was studied. The on-line exam is 55
questions drawn randomly from the database of 180 questions.
* A significant number of questions were either
irrelevant to flotilla or entry level members, misleading or
incorrect. This confirmed the observation of many of the
members that commented on the APC exam.
* The entire APC database was reviewed, question by
question, and revised to eliminate the problems above.
* This new database initially released is now being
reviewed byNational staff and will shortly be released in the final
version to the National Testing Center to replace the existing
database. This final release is expected before the end of
February.
* In parallel, the APC Instructor Guide has been
reviewed in a similar manner to the on-line database to reflect
changes developed in the effort described above. This document
has been reviewed and approved for release. However, release
will be held until the update of the Student Study Guide is
complete. Since the documents are complimentary, they should be
released at the same time. Both releases are expected to be
completed by the first week of April.
* Remaining is the review of the written exams A, B, C,
D. These exams consist of 50 questions each. A cursory
review identified some questions that will need to be replaced or
revised. Fortunately, there are not as many problematic
questions on the written exams as the on-line exams. This may
explain why the reported problems were mostly with the on-line
exams. The Facilitator's Answer Sheet and Member Examination
for each exam will be updated (8 documents). Update of the
written exams will be completed in April.
