SUBJECT:  AUX ACN EXAMINATION ADMINISTRATION

1.  In accordance with the decision of the NEXCOM at their meeting in January 2003, effective immediately, regardless of whether the 3rd or 4th Editions of  the Advanced Coastal Navigation (ACN) textbook is being used to teach the AUX ACN Specialty Course, in or not in conjunction with the presentation of an ACN course to the general public, Auxiliarists will take only the AUXACN-A and AUXACN-B examinations at the end of course.  The examinations for this purpose are the existing AUXACN-A [ANSC 5545, Code 495, Edition 2, Test 1] and AUXACN-B [ANSC 5546, Code 496, Edition 2, Test 1] examinations currently in the possession of the DIRAUX, being issued for the courses using the 3rd Edition of the ACN text.  Auxiliarists will not take the AN-3 (April 2002) 66 question examination provided in the ACN package.

2.  The process of administering these AUXACN-A and AUXACN-B examinations is the same used in the administration of any Operational Specialty Course (OSC) examination.  Depending upon the current district practice for OSC examinations, the examinations would usually be requested from the DIRAUX, with a designated proctor.  The examinations would be transmitted to the designated proctor for administration.  Upon completion of the examination, the examination, together with the answer sheet would be returned to the DIRAUX (or, depending upon current district practice, to some other testing/grading authority) for grading.  The appropriate individual (proctor, FSO-MT, etc.) would be notified of the grade and would then advise the Auxiliary student.  Certificates of completion would be issued by DIRAUX.

3.  For those Auxiliarists who are in the transition at the end of the AUXACN course who have already taken and passed the AN-3 (April 2002) examination, they should receive credit for taking the AUXACN-A examination, and do not have to take that examination.  However, they will still have to take and pass the AUXACN-B examination to complete the AUXNAV Specialty qualification.

4.  Please disseminate this information to your members by all available means as rapidly as possible.
